General comments:
Widespread but very local resident.

The ancient oak-dominated woodlands on clay soil in the south-east of the county are the sites that currently support this large moth in abundance. It is apparently absent from the ancient woodland of Epping Forest on the east side of the River Lea in Essex and it is possibly significant that the woodland there rests on a deposit of glacial gravel rather than clay. In the past few years there are signs that the moth has also colonised other woodlands in Hertfordshire where clay is a component part of the substrate. Its discovery at Osterley Park in Middlesex in 2021 was a surprise.
