General comments:
Extremely local resident.

Interestingly, our earliest report of this species in the county is not until 1930, when an adult was found feeding on sallow catkins near Hastoe by A. L. Goodson (Foster, 1941). Later (Foster, 1942) the second record, of two at light in Northchurch in 1937 and collected by J. Bell, is reported. Hertfordshire lies at the extreme north-east of the range of this moth in Britain; its distribution extends south-westwards via Buckinghamshire and Berkshire to Hampshire, although there is also a population in Gloucestershire and Wales. It is no surprise, therefore that many of our records are from the Herts/Bucks border area. At the single locality in the north-east, where adults were first recorded at light on 22nd March 2002 and subsequently found to be quite common there during 2005, a small population continues to thrive in isolation. Adults come to light traps somewhat reluctantly; the easiest way of finding adult White-marked is by beating the blossom-bearing boughs of sallows at night over a sheet, whereupon the moths will drop to the ground and remain there whilst being examined!
