Cabbage Moth
Mamestra brassicae

(Linnaeus, 1758) 2154 / 73.274

General comments:
Widespread but local resident.

The apparent confinement of larvae to cultivated Brassica species is misleading - they are just easier to find in monocultural fields. Since larvae on these crops are usually destroyed, others must be raised on the many species of wild Brassica and related Cruciferae. It is a generally common and widespread insect and according to sources consulted appears always to have been so since at least the 1880s. From about 2010 onwards, a slight decline in numbers of individuals entering light traps is gradually becoming evident.

Recorded in 35 (85%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1887.
Last Recorded in 2024.
