Tawny Shears
Hadena perplexa

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) 2167 / 73.286

General comments:
Widespread but local resident.

Subspecies perplexa is referred to as the Tawny Shears in Britain, whilst subspecies capsophila Duponchel is the Pod Lover, which is neither present nor expected in our area. There is a widespread resident population on the chalk in North Hertfordshire, and here the moth is common. Elsewhere, most map dots represent single records from isolated sites with no indication of breeding/residency and so presumably relate either to immigrants or vagrant examples.

Recorded in 27 (66%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1887.
Last Recorded in 2023.
