General comments:
Widespread but local resident.

Wetlands and other damp habitats support the Southern Wainscot, and a feature of all Hertfordshire sites is the presence of reeds. The moth is usually abundant where it is found. A particularly strongly marked form persists in several places within the Lea Valley and this has been misidentified on several occasions as Obscure Wainscot; such doubtful cases are always resolved by dissection of the genitalia, when the two are easily separated.
