Poplar Grey
Subacronicta megacephala

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775) 2278 / 73.046
=Acronicta megacephala

General comments:
Widespread and numerically common resident.

Although often confused with other Acronicta species the Poplar Grey is easily recognised by stepping back and looking at the general appearance of the moth rather than its detail - each forewing bears a pale patch incorporating and extending outwards from the reniform stigma; these emphasise the overall appearance of the resting insect as a 'face' - presumably intended to scare predators. It is a common moth everywhere in the area.

Recorded in 34 (83%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1887.
Last Recorded in 2023.
