Miller
Acronicta leporina

(Linnaeus, 1758) 2280 / 73.040

General comments:
Widespread and common resident.

Distribution may, perhaps, be partly restricted by the need for soft, rotten timber into which mature larvae tunnel for pupation - a behavioural trait shared with Alder Moth, but not with the other more common members of this group. As with the Sycamore, the flight period is fairly lengthy, extending from the start of May to the very end of July, but there is no evidence to suggest any more than a single generation. There was an unusually late example at Berkhamsted on 18th September 2015 (Ian Gamble).

Recorded in 32 (78%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1892.
Last Recorded in 2023.
