General comments:
Widespread, near ubiquitous resident.

Adults fly in two well-separated generations, though the second generation is much larger than the first in terms of numbers of individuals. The melanic ab. salicis Curtis has apparently declined in the past thirty or so years; it was frequent in the south of Hertfordshire and in Middlesex during the 1970s, but the majority of individuals caught there recently take the typical form.

Recorded in 37 (90%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1893.
Last Recorded in 2024.
