Old Lady
Mormo maura

(Linnaeus, 1758) 2300 / 73.107

General comments:
Widespread and common.

Adult Old Lady moths are rather feebly attracted to light, but are also well-known for their habit of aestivation: they are easily found at rest during the day in sheds, cellars and very often inside houses. Frequently, several adults will roost together. Larvae are most easily found by beating blackthorn, hawthorn and other bushes in hedges where these are also covered in ivy. Perhaps the ivy creates a suitable microclimate, or perhaps this is the natural roosting habitat of adults?
