Large Wainscot
Rhizedra lutosa

(Hübner, 1803) 2375 / 73.134

General comments
Widespread but very local resident; also vagrant.

The large Wainscot was first noted in the county by S. H. Spencer in his garden at Gladstone Road, Watford, during 1893. Most of our records are made in wetland areas, mainly river valleys, though not necessarily in the immediate vicinity of the foodplant, but there are records away from this habitat and though a few undoubtedly represent wanderers the possibility that garden and village ponds can support this species should not be overlooked.

Recorded in 32 (78%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1893.
Last Recorded in 2023.
