General comments
Very local resident.

Slightly damp grassland habitats with plenty of rushes, usually on the acidic side of neutral, are the places where this small moth can be found. Confusion is possible with Small Wainscot, especially if the grassland is within a wider woodland habitat, but the Small Rufous is a much more slender insect and always has a characteristic grey thorax contrasting with the brown of the rest of the body.
