Large Red-belted Clearwing
Synanthedon culiciformis

(Linnaeus, 1758) 381 / 52.007

General Comments:
Extinct in our area. Probably extinct in south-east England as a whole. Declining nationally.

Hertfordshire:
Our records of this species are very few indeed. Foster (1937) notes two pupae at Broxbourne Common in 1924 (not Broxbourne ... "common" as misinterpreted by deWorms (London Naturalist 33). An adult was noted at Ashridge in 1933 and one was collected by R. S. Ferry in Knebworth Great Wood during June 1947. Reports of adults during 1999 at Wormley Wood and Broxbourne Wood, both mentioned in The Moths of Hertfordshire (2008) are regarded as unsubstantiated and potentially relate to Synanthedon myopaeformis (Red-belted Clearwing.

Middlesex:
Our only report is in Cockerell's 1891 list of Lepidoptera of Middlesex: he lists Isleworth, without any detail.
