General comments:
Widespread resident.

The Mottled Beauty is confused by some inexperienced observers with Willow Beauty, though fresh adults of Mottled Beauty typically start to appear as the first generation of Willow Beauties are becoming worn. However, this is not a foolproof guide and wing pattern must be looked at properly. Mottled Beauties appear in a variety of forms, though few extreme varieties are recorded for Hertfordshire.
