General comments:
Widespread and numerically common resident.

An exceptionally unseasonal adult was caught in my own garden light trap at Bishops Stortford on 14th February 2002. Many Hertfordshire/Middlesex adults are marginally darker than those further north in Britain, but the dark grey melanic ab. infuscata Haworth is rarely reported and usually from more southerly parts of our area. In the London Area from 1980 to 1991 it formed approximately 80 per cent of the population (Plant, 1993). I caught examples in my garden during both 1988 and 1990, but have not seen it here since then.

Recorded in 33 (80%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1893.
Last Recorded in 2023.
