General comments:
Former vagrant / absent.

Once resident in deciduous woodlands on clay soils in the south-east, but it has declined and Parsons et al (2005) regarded it as occurring in only 12 British sites from 1980 to 1997. It was recorded by Stephens from the Hertford area in 1834, but Boyd (1901) does not include it in his list for the Cheshunt area, which included the Broxbourne Woods complex 'the area of the county most likely to have supported it'. Foster (1916) notes, under the heading of 'Pechipogon barbalis (Common Fan-foot)' that it was 'frequent in the larger woods' in the Hitchin area, though he does not list Fan-foot; we do not map this record as it is perhaps incorrect.. In the later county list Foster (1937), under the heading of Herminia barbalis Clerck, repeats the records from Hertford and Hitchin. In Middlesex, reliably recorded at Feltham, but reports from Ruislip and Hampstead Garden Suburb are regarded as unreliable.
