Tortrix viridana

Linnaeus, 17581033 / 49.059

General comments:

Near Ubiquitous; possibly genuinely absent from the City of London and that immediate area.

Perhaps the most familiar of all tortrix moths, this green insect is likely to be discovered at almost every site surveyed. Oak is certainly the favoured foodplant and it is not uncommon for the canopy of really rather large trees to be completely defoliated by the larvae in May/June; the noise produced by, literally, millions of particles of caterpillar 'frass' falling from the canopy sounds like rainfall. The oak trees invariably recover within a few weeks and since the moth is in the egg stage from July through to the following April they suffer no further damage until the following year.

Large females can be confused by the inexperienced with Cream-bordered Green Pea, a macro which has white, rather than grey, hind wings
