Endothenia ustulana

(Haworth, 1811)1101 / 49.190

General comments:
Extremely local and rare.

The larva feeds in the lower stem and rootstock of Bugle plants (Ajuga reptans. Griffith (1884) records Penthina carbonana (= Endothenia pullana) from the Sandridge area, but later corrects this to ustulana in his 1890 paper, where he also notes that there were actually two examples taken, from Symondshyde Great Wood and 'near St Albans'. Although it is clear that both were taken prior to 1884 no specific year is given. Recent records are few and scattered, including in Middlesex and Perivale Wood, suggesting that the species is resident at extremely low density.
