Epinotia abbreviana

(Fabricius, 1794)1150 / 49.234

General comments:
Widespread and common.

Mined leaf buds display characteristic pattern of holes when the leaf later opens and this is sufficient evidence to record the moth in spring. A larva collected from Stinging Nettle at Batch Wood on 17th April 2004, and fed to maturity on this plant yielded a male E. abbreviana (identified from examination of genitalia) later in the year. This is an extremely unusual foodplant. Perhaps it fell from overhanging trees and had no alternative food source; certainly it is an unusual example of xenophagy.

Recorded in 32 (78%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1959.
Last Recorded in 2023.
