This species and E. cirsiana have been treated as a single species in the past, and old records that did not specify f. cirsiana and for which we have not been able to examine a specimen have had to be disregarded in the interests of accuracy.

Care should be taken by the inexperienced in the separation of the following three Epiblema species as all can appear near identical to the untrained eye.

E. sticticana (formerly E. farfarae) - larva on Colt's-foot
E. scutulana - larva on Marsh Thisle and Spear Thistle
E. cirsiana - larva Common Knapweed and occasionally Marsh Thistle

Confusion is also possible with E. cnicicolana - not yet recorded in our area (larva on Fleabane).
