Grapholita janthinana

(Duponchel, 1835)1245 / 49.359

General comments:
Widespread resident.

This is one of a group of related species that are readily attracted to artificial pheromone lures; most were regarded as rare but the new technique has shown them to be both numerically common and widespread.

The larva feeds internally in a hawthorn berry, often spinning two or more berries together with a flimsy silk web to which particles of frass sometimes adhere. Similar internal feeding by the much smaller larva of the micro Blastodacna hellerella is distinguished by a complete lack of exuded frass and the fact that the larva feeds in a single berry - not spinning two or more together. A brownish spot on the berry betrays its presence. The larva of janthinana matures to a dark brownish colour whilst that of hellerella is yellowish which, often with a pinkish tinge.
