Cydia strobilella

(Linnaeus, 1758)1254 / 49.335

General comments:
Local resident.

Some members of the genus Cydia present a challenge of identification and in many cases, examination of the genitalia is almost always the preferred method.

Recorded 1899; re-found in 2013 after a gap of 114 years. Evidence of residency is from an adult reared from a Spruce (Picea) cone in 2013 and again in 2020 at the same site, with additional records elsewhere in the intervening years. Those intervening records coincided with several others at various localities across the south-east of England. This might suggest some sort of movement or immigration, or then again it could just be another example of a species persisting long-term at very low density and suddenly becoming numerically abundant (synchronous emergence is a common feature amongst many insect groups). It may now, potentially, be wherever the host tree is growing.

Recorded in 9 (22%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1899.
Last Recorded in 2023.
