Eriocrania semipurpurella

(Stephens, 1835)13 / 2.007

General comments:
Allegedly, this is the most common of the birch-feeding species of Eriocrania, though there is no evidence from Hertfordshire to support that supposition. Mines are rather similar to those made by E. unimaculella from which they can only be reliably separated by examining the larva, which has lateral projections on the first abdominal segment (these are on the second segment in unimaculella). As with the other members of this group, both mines and adults are very much under-recorded.Readers are referred to the web site at www.leafmines.co.uk for more information.

Hertfordshire Notes:
Evidently likely to be widespread if looked for properly.

Middlesex Notes:
Another birch associate, yet this species is clearly more frequent in Middlesex than some of the species already listed above. Records are widespread, from urban areas such as Wembley to more rural zones and the species is, without doubt, under-recorded here. In the past few years it has appeared across southern Hertfordshire and so is surely now an overlooked moth in Middlesex? T
