Agriphila selasella

(Hübner, 1813)1303 / 63.092

General comments:
Vagrant. Perhaps a very rarer resident?

Probably only occurs as a vagrant from the Thames area and elsewhere. Records are almost always in error for the ubiquitous Agriphila tristella. Examples with the long pale streak along the forewing pure white are selasella, with the streak yellowish brown could be either species. However, wing-tips of selasella are more rounded (rather pointed in tristella). Once candidate selasella are selected it is necessary to look at the head in side view; in tristella it is strongly and obviously produced forwards and slightly upwards to form what some books refer to as a 'cone'; in selasella the head is only slightly produced and the projection is rounded in profile - not conical. Beginners should look for the feature on tristella first before trying to prove it absent on the other species.
