Sitochroa palealis

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)1370 / 63.014

General comments:
Widespread and common resident.

In recording this species from Harpenden in 1947, Fryer (1950) notes that there had been only two previous Hertfordshire records, in 1901 and 1944. The former was at Bushey Heath (P. J. Barraud), but details of the latter are not immediately apparent. There are no further records until 1997 at Marshall's Heath (John Murray), 6th August 1997 at Ravensdell Wood (David Manning) and 17th August 1998 at Patmore Heath by me. Eleven further records emanate from the years 2000 to 2006 but breeding had by that time only been confirmed at the two tetrads of Therfield Heath. It was noted that records away from the chalk might relate to immigrant or vagrant examples. Writing in December 2023, the moth has spread to become a familiar sight in areas wherever there is Wild Carrot growing nearby. In Hertfordshire, at least, Wild Carrot seems to have been included in a great many seed mixes used on new road verges. The apparent scarcity in Middlesex appears genuine.
