General comments:
Extremely local and rare resident.

Goater (1986) regards this as a local species of chalk downland and clearings in Beech woods. Foster (1937) lists Hertfordshire records from Bushey Heath (Barraud), Hemel Hempstead (Piffard), St Albans (Gibbs, Dickson) and Tring (Goodson, Gibbs). All relate to the late nineteenth century apart from the Tring record by Goodson, which was certainly made between 1904 and 1937. There are no other records. Today (writing in 2023) it is resident in Hertfordshire at Hexton Chalk Pit nature reserve only and absent fromMiddlesex.
