Achroia grisella

(Fabricius, 1794)1426 / 62.005

General comments
Widespread but rather local and seldom abundant.

First recorded in the area at Cheshunt in 1868 (Boyd, Entomologist's Monthly Magazine : 147) this rather uninteresting looking little moth used to wreak havoc in bee hives. It is perhaps not able to adapt to wild bees, which might account for its scarcity, as bee-keepers tend to destroy it on sight. Slender evidence for this is the greater abundance of the Bee Moth Aphomia sociella, whose preferences are exactly the reverse.

Recorded in 27 (66%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1885.
Last Recorded in 2023.
