Widespread and locally common resident.

Illustrated by J. F. Stephens from a 'Hertford' specimen in Illustrations of British Entomology: 314 (published in 1834); the record referred to by Parsons for the pre-1970 period, in his 1993 pyralid status review, relates to the same source. Other than this, it was completely absent from both counties until one at Greenford, 21st July 2005 - the first ever Middlesex record. There was a single moth at Barnet in 2008 then one on the chalk in the north of Hertfordshire at Pitstone Hill, in 2011. In 2013, it suddenly began to appear, apparently spreading eastwards from the north-west. In 2023 it is an expected species even at non-chalk sites.
