Phycitodes saxicola

(Vaughan, 1870)1484 / 62.059

General comments:
Immigrant / vagrant.

There has been significant confusion between this species and Phycitodes maritima. Genitalia dissection is compulsory in support of both species. In Middlesex, Phycitodes saxicola is perhaps a relic of the former fauna; it hangs on as an extremely local resident but is probably boosted by wanderers from the Essex section of the Thames Estuary. There are no Hertfordshire records; a very few have been submitted, but where a specimen is available have been shown to be maritima.
