Heliozela sericiella

(Haworth, 1828)154 / 6.003

General comments:
On deciduous oaks Quercus. The larva first mines a twig, then a leaf petiole before moving to the midrib, which swells to form a gall. It then moves into the leaf base, hollows out a blotch and immediately cuts a case measuring from 4 to 5 millimetres long by two to three millimetres wide, seals itself inside and drops to the ground to pupate. Cut-outs are usually made around the end of July; adults fly in May and sometimes 'swarm' under oak branches.

Widespread but local - the scarcity in Middlesex is likely to reflect under-recording.
