Antispila metallella

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)158 / 6.001

General notes:
Larva on Dogwood Cornus sanguinea. Mines on Cornelian Cherry Cornus mas are not made by this species - they are caused by Antispila treitschkiella. For this reason, published reports that do not specify the foodplant have been ignored during the preparation of the distribution maps.

This species flies earlier than A. petryi, which also feeds on Dogwood. The caterpillar of metalella cuts a larger oval of leaf for its case - the hole measuring 5.5 - 7.0 millimetres lengthways. Antispila petreyi also feeds on Dogwood, in an near identical manner, but the excised oval hole measures 4.0 - 5.0mm. Records of the larval stage of all Antispila species should please include the dimensions of the oval hole.

Hertfordshire Notes:
Widespread but very local - no often seen. It is likely to be under-recorded.

Middlesex Notes:
Mapped for Middlesex in volume 1 of MBGBI, but without any supporting data. Recent reports from Heathrow and Hampstead Heath. Doubtless under-recorded.

Mine: Either the leaf or a good photograph required

Recorded in 16 (39%) of 41 10k Squares.
