Infurcitinea argentimaculella

(Stainton, 1849)203 / 12.006

Hertfordshire Notes:
This species is mapped for Hertfordshire in volume 2 of Moths and butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland, but the late Maitland Emmet, who produced the maps, was not in possession of the supporting data for the record. The larvae feed from a distinctive silk tunnel constructed on lichens growing on walls and tree trunks, but since few people can recognise these the species is certainly overlooked. The recent discovery that it is quite common in another county led to the realisation that several distinguished colleagues had overlooked it for want of experience. During September 2007, Seth Gibson made a trip to Hertfordshire specifically to find this species and succeeded in doing so at Whippendell Woods (a larval tube on Scots Pine and another on oak), Dawes Common (five on oak), Woodman's Wood (one on hawthorn) and Chipperfield Common (six on Scots Pine). Subsequent specialist searching discovered larval tubes at sites in the north of the county. It is likely that further specialised searches will turn up new sites: such effort is strongly encouraged.
