Bucculatrix albedinella

(Zeller, 1839)271 / 14.007

Hertfordshire Notes:
Scarce - possibly increasing. It is unfortunate that moth recording in the county in the years prior to the devastating outbreak of Dutch Elm Disease in the 1970s largely failed to recognise the existence of 'micros'. We can, as a consequence, only guess that the loss of elms from the Hertfordshire landscape had an equally devastating effect on elm-feeding micros. By the time we published The Moths of Hertfordshire in 2008 it was a rare moth with us, with only three records. Since then, it seems to have embarked upon a comeback. Larvae are noted on elms Ulmus procera and Ulmus carpinifolia. There is scope for confusion with the larval mines of Bucculatrix ulmifoliae.

Middlesex Notes:
Increasing in range, but currently only locally distributed; probably overlooked in many places.

Mine: Either the leaf or a good photograph required

Recorded in 17 (41%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1900.
Last Recorded in 2023.
