Parornix carpinella

(Frey, 1863)302a / 15.027

General comments:
Most species of Parnornix can be named reliably from their larval mines but in cases of difficulty the adults should be reared through for examination. However, almost wild-caught adults will be worn, to at least some degree, and in most cases we will insist on genitalia examination to obtain the correct species name.

Past confusion with Parornix fagivora has been mentioned under that species. Emmet (1986) commented that carpinella appeared to be uncommon, being reported from Kent and Essex only. However, he also noted that it was hard to find because larvae occur at very low density. In spite of some twenty years elapsing since that statement we still have very few records in Hertfordshire and Middlesex and so it seems that Emmst was in fact correct.
