Parornix finitimella

(Zeller, 1850)308 / 15.032

General comments:
Most species of Parnornix can be named reliably from their larval mines but in cases of difficulty the adults should be reared through for examination. Separation of the blackthorn-feeding Parornix is often difficult, but rearing adults from collected mines seems to suggest that finitimella is far more frequent than Deltaornix torquillella. It was not recognised as British until 1917 when it was discovered in Essex (Pierce, 1917); this explains the absence of nineteenth century records, but it is surprising that there are no Hertfordshire records prior to 1981, when Maitland Emmet found mines in Broxbourne Wood on 12th September and later reared adults.
