Phyllonorycter quercifoliella

(Zeller, 1839)320 / 15.039

General comments:
Widespread and common. Almost all Phyllonorycter mines on oak will require rearing through of the adult for accurate identification.

Larval mines of this species cannot be separated from those of P. messaniella nor from the bulk of those of P. harrisella. and in order to generate maps it has been necessary to embark upon an extensive programme of rearing adults. This has involved collecting batches of mines, putting all those from each site together inside the cut off foot of a pair of nylon tights and staking the latter out on the ground under bushes in the garden until the following year. These were brought indoors in March and ignored until May, when they were opened and the dead dried adults scooped up and dissected. This time consuming exercise has ensured that the maps for all three species are valid.

Mine: Moth needs to be reared and, in some cases, possibly dissected.
