General comments
Widespread and abundant. This is a relatively new species to the British Isles. It was first found here in October 1990 by the late Maitland Emmet during the course of the Annual Exhibition of the British Entomological and Natural History Society in South Kensington, London (Middlesex). I had the good fortune to be present as he opened the car door, swung one leg out, looked down, scooped up a Plane leaf and immediately declared "Ah look, Phyllonorycter platani - new to Britain" and then carried on! It has spread rapidly since then. It was first found in Hertfordshire at Bishops Stortford in 1997, but this is quite a leap from London and surely it must have been overlooked in the south of the county between 1990 and 1997. It is now "everywhere".
