Phyllonorycter blancardella

Fabricius, 1781326 / 15.046

General comments:
If our interpretation of this species is correct, then it is widespread and common, affecting apple trees across the region. Considerable care must be exercised in interpreting old records of blancardella, hostis and mespilella. The name cydoniella has been used in the past to include hostis.

The name blancardella has been used for both the current understanding of blancardella and for hostis, whilst pomifoliella is an old name for both hostis and mespilella. It is fairly certain that the current blancardella was intended by Foster (1937) in recording Lithocolletis concomitella Bankes, for 'Letchworth, Knebworth '1923' (Edwards); Hitchin (Durrant)'. A few years later, Foster (1942) adds "blancardella Fabr. (= pomifoliella Zell.)" to the Hertfordshirelist from Hitchin, in 1941, and by process of elimination this must be present-day hostis. Other old records are less easy to interpret and many have been disregarded for the present exercise. The map shows only confirmed modern records of what we currently call blancardella.
