Phyllonorycter dubitella

Herrich-Schäffer, 1855336 / 15.057

General comments:
Formerly very rare, now widespread and local and extending its range. Associated with Goat Willow (Salix caprea). Adults are needed for correct identification; in the vast majority of cases where larval leaf mines have been reared through, the resultant adults have been P. salicicolella and not the expected species.

Hertfordshire Notes:
Leaf mines were found at the Colne Valley regeneration site in Watford, 6 Nov 2012, and adults reared to confirm the identification (Andy King). There is only a single previous Hertfordshire record, from Bricket Wood in 1980 ... a gap of 32 years. The remaining 10 reports are all from 2016 to 2022 strongly suggesting a species that is on the up.

Middlesex Notes:
Our earliest report is from Bushey Park in 2002, from where it was noted again in 2008. Remaining records are all from 2011 to 2022.

Mine: Moth needs to be reared and, in some cases, possibly dissected.

Recorded in 11 (27%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1980.
Last Recorded in 2022.
