Phyllonorycter hilarella

General comments
This species is called spinolella in volume 2 of Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland.

Hertfordshire Notes:
In our 2008 publication The Moths of Hertfordshire we reported that for the nineteenth century there were only two records - from the Sandridge area prior to 1885 and Cheshunt prior to 1901. Foster (1937) adds a record from Ashridge. We did not map the Sandridge and Ashridge records as the precise locality could not be determined adequately . The validity of all three records cannot be determined as there are no specimens. More recently there are only two valid records - from Bricket Wood on 2nd November 1980 (Maitland Emmet) and my own from Hexton Chalk Pit on 20th October 2001.

Since then, we have added seven extra locations - but all in the years since 2010 (and none since 2019).

Middlesex Notes:
The single map dot relates to an ecology survey near Heathrow Airport in 2016. However, the record was never formally submitted - it is listed in the largely unreliable web resource that is iRecord, with no further information. We include it here for completion, though we reserve judgement on its validity.

Mine: Moth needs to be reared and, in some cases, possibly dissected.

Recorded in 8 (20%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1890.
Last Recorded in 2019.
