General comments: Rather locally distributed, though where mines are found there are often many. The distribution will be limited by the availability of alder trees.
Hertfordshire Notes: In the book The Moths of Hertfordshire (2008) I wrote that our only county record is of the very long mines found by me on Common Alder by the Fiddlers Bridge at Gilston in 2005. The absence of this species from elsewhere is rather surprising, although Goodey (2002) shows an equivalent absence of records on the Essex side of the Rivers Lea and Stort.
Writing now in November 2023, it is evident that the moth has either increased or else we were not looking for it properly! Given the intense surveys of leaf mines in the years before the book was published, I am tempted to suggest the former option is most likely to be correct.
Middlesex Notes: Apart from mines in Buckingham Palace Garden in 1997, all Middlesex records are from 2007 onwards.
Mine: Either the leaf or a good photograph required
