Phyllocnistis xenia

Hering, 1936369 / 15.093

General comments:
A recent addition to the fauna of our two counties. First found in Britain in Kent in 1974, this micro-moth has spread slowly but steadily. The larvae create distinctive mines in the leaves of Grey and White Poplars - mines of similar character on other poplar species are not this species.

Hertfordshire Notes:
It first appeared in the far west of the county at Aldbury where Gavin Broad caught adults at light 27 June 2011. The distinctive mines in the leaves of White Poplar Populus alba have been seen from 2012 onwards in scattered localities, including Waterford Heath (Andrew Wood) and Rickmansworth (Andrew King); the moth is limited, probably, only by the scarcity of the host tree in some areas.

Middlesex Notes:
First noted at Alexandra Palace in 2010 by Helen Bantock. subsequently found in various localities from 2012 onwards.
