Argyresthia laevigatella

(Heydenreich, 1851)401 / 20.001

General comments:
Rather local and uncommon. This reflects the scarcity of Larch trees Larix decidua in the two counties. Older reports of this Larch-feeding moth might be confused with the Spruce-feeding Argyresthia glabratella; both species have more or less unmarked wings. In Pierce & Metcalfe (1935) this species (laevigatella) is called atmoriella and the genitalia shown under that label are correct. However, those labelled as glabratella are in reality also laevigatella. The correct drawing for glabratella is the one labelled as illuminatella. A far better resource may be found at the Moth Dissection website. The moth flies in May and June.
Hertfordshire Notes:
There is the map dot for vice-county 20 in volume 3 of Moths and Butterflies of Great Britain and Ireland, published in 1996; I have been unable to track down the details of this record.
Middlesex Notes:
The two records are from Enfield in 1979 and Osterley Park in 2015.
