General comments:

It was not until 1980 that C. prunifoliae was recognised as a British species. All records of all three species coracipennella, prunifoliae and spinella prior to that year, must be treated as unconfirmed unless critically examined since 1980. All three species require examination of genitalia to separate the adults. Mature larval cases are also impossible to separate so that adults are always require rearing and subsequent dissection. Larval host plant is a guide but not a reliable identification feature.

In our two counties, Coleophora spinella is apparently the most frequently encountered of the three species, though always rather local in appearance. There are no reports of larval foodplants in our area; elsewhere in Britain the favoured foodplants include cherries, apple, pear and also Cotoneaster.
