Coleophora ibipennella

Zeller, 1849535 / 37.052

General comments:

Widespread and common. On oaks.

The larvae of this species graze the lower surface of oak leaves from a pistol-shaped case, so that the feeding pattern left behind is easily separated from the other oak-feeding species, which mine the leaves internally.

Reliability of data:
Formerly called ardeaepennella Scott, 1861. Confusion with the birch-feeding betulella Heinemann & Wocke, 1877 persisted up to and including the 1972 checklist by Kloet & Hincks, so that old literature reports of ibipennella almost certainly refer to betulella (unless larval foodplant was specifically stated). The confusion persisted in several texts until definitively clarified by Emmet, Langmaid, Bland, Corley & Razowski (1996) [volume 3 of MBGBI].
