Elachista bedellella

Sircom, 1848616 / 38.010

An adult caught in chalk grassland habitat at Church Hill (Therfield Heath) on 25th July 2024 by William Bishop (genitalia checked by Colin Plant) was surprising, though the entire Eachista genus is hopelessly under-recorded in both Herts and Middlesex. It is of potential interest and relevance that this species was reported for the first time in a couple of other other counties of England during 2024 so it is perhaps possible that our record represents part of a much wider event whereby the species may have stirred from a prolonged national dormancy or else perhaps some sort of "invasion". The species should be looked for specifically during the summer of 2025.
