Carcina quercana

(Fabricius, 1775)658 / 31.001

Generalcomments
Widespread and common - almost ubiquitous.
This is probably one of our most familiar micro moths, even if the uninitiated misidentify it as a tortricid and then inevitably fail to arrive at a name. During a light-hearted discussion with Mark Cooper on the usefulness or otherwise of English names for micro-moths, Carcina quercana was jokingly given the name of 'The Flat Cooper', for reasons which are wholly flippant. The name was picked up on by a European entomologist whilst I was collecting in Hungary and used in a publication; the origin of this entirely 'spoof' name, and its author, is therefore placed on record!
