Diurnea fagella

([Denis & Schiffermüller], 1775)663 / 29.001

General comments:
Widespread and common.
This is one of our commonest early spring moths, with males coming to light often in large numbers and in a range of colour forms that broadly group into a lighter grey group and a far darker black group. The black group seem to represent about 25 per cent of the total population. Females, which have wings of a different shape, are very easily found at rest on tree trunks in woodlands during the early part of the night. It is frequent in gardens, presumably reflecting its ability to feed on a variety of deciduous trees.

Recorded in 34 (83%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1890.
Last Recorded in 2025.
