Metzneria aprilella

(Herrich-Schäffer, 1854)727a / 35.059

General comments:
Status unclear (only 2 records). Perhaps an extremely local resident?

Our first record is from Welwyn on 22nd June 1983 (Raymond Uffen); the later report is from a light trap at Aldbury in 2011.

The larvae feed in burdocks (Arctium lappa and A. minus), over-wintering in the stem just below the dead flower head; if stems are cut, any adults should emerge in June.

Recorded in 3 (7%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1982.
Last Recorded in 2011.
