Hertfordshire Notes: A familiar sight in woodlands and in hedgerows, the mines are usually easy to separate from those of Stigmella microtheriella, a parthenogenetic species that feeds on the same two foodplants. The most reliable feature for identification is the egg position: S.floslactella always lays the egg on the underside in a vein axil whereas S.microtheriella lays it often on or near a vein, but not in the axil. The larvae of microtheriella fit tightly in the mine and feed venter upwards, whereas S. floslactella larvae leave empty margins and feed dorsum up. Records of mines should always be accompanied by the name of the foodplant.

Middlesex Notes: On Hazel Corylus avellana. Widespread and common. So far absent from most densely urban zones, although present in the Natural History Museum's Wildlife Garden in South Kensington.

Mine: Either the leaf or a good photograph required
