Aristotelia ericinella

(Zeller, 1839)752 / 35.050

General comments:
Very local, but occasionally numerous where found.
The larvae feed on both Calluna and Erica and are a familiar sight at places were these plants grow, for example Nomansland Common and Sherrardspark Wood in Hertfordshire. However, we have yet to find it in other heathy areas, such as Hertford Heath; this may be a simple consequence of nobody light trapping in these areas at the right time of year. The adults are usually easy to find by day if the heather is gently disturbed. Some, at least, of the Middlesex records seem to suggest that garden varieties of heathers might be utilised; all reports are from light traps that are not obviously associated with areas where heathers grow.

Recorded in 10 (24%) of 41 10k Squares.
First Recorded in 1890.
